What are Reasonable Accommodations

The Center for Counseling and Accessibility (CCA) is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and accessible college experience. This guide provides need-to-know direction for navigating the accommodations process at Coppin State University.

Accommodations are proactive adjustments intended to remove barriers in the physical and/or digital campus environments. With guidance from the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Coppin State University is committed to providing equitable access for students to reach their full academic potential. Without reasonable accommodations, student might be unfairly evaluated based on their disability rather than their mastery of a subject matter.

The Evaluation: Determining how to best support You

We use a collaborative, student-centered model to tailor your accommodations

  • Self-Report:The student should thoroughly describe the barriers they face in class and/or residence.
  • Professional Documentation: Well-documented clinical evidence from an approved provider helps accessibility counselors understand the functional limitations related to your condition
  • Reasonable Accommodations: We advocate to implement reasonable accommodations that provide access without causing undue burden or lowering the academic standards of your degree program.

Privacy and Confidentiality

  • Your Diagnosis is Private: The CCA will never tell your instructors the specific reason you have accommodations. Your instructors will receive documentation that only lists the services you receive.
  • Medical Records: Your medical documentation is secure and is not part of your general academic transcript.

Timelines and Deadlines

  • The Seven Day Rule: We recommend requesting your letters at least one week before your first exam. Accommodations are not retroactive. They begin the moment you are approved for accommodations, not any time before that.
  • Processing Time: Once you submit your intake form, it typically takes three to five business days to process your request and contact you for the next steps.

Temporary Accommodations

If you have a sudden injury or illness you can request temporary accommodations. The process is the same as permanent requests.

Accessible Housing and Dining

Accommodations are not limited to the classroom. If you need a specific housing or campus event related accommodation due to your impairment, the CCA coordinates these requests with the relevant campus departments. You must communicate with CCA about your need for housing/event accommodations.
